A Map of Strange Terrain
Solo exhibition at WeCollect Gallery, Madrid
23 May 2024 – 22 June 2024
Wandering aimlessly often leads to the most profound discoveries. As we meander through unfamiliar paths, leaving beaten tracks behind, we stumble upon revelations that structured routes rarely offer. This is how we form cognitive maps—internal visualizations that organize and clarify the unknown.
Today, as we delve into the burgeoning realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), we find ourselves charting a similar course. The enigmatic, "black-boxed" systems of AI technology present a modern wilderness, vast in its potential impacts on humanity. This exploration is just beginning, and each step forward reveals new questions and uncharted paths.
"A Map of Strange Terrain," a solo exhibition by Alsino Skowronnek, uses this rapidly evolving technological landscape as a backdrop. It delves into the workings of these advanced systems and their future implications. The exhibition weaves together visual fragments, constructing a cognitive map of this novel and peculiar domain.
Alsino's unique artistic approach, shaped by his backgrounds in graffiti and programming, treats AI both as an integral tool of the painting process as well as a subject matter. His paintings blend traditional techniques of the plastic arts with cutting-edge digital technologies. By employing AI algorithms trained on bespoke datasets of graffiti tags and ancient scripts, he designs innovative letter formations that form the foundation of his compositions. This fusion blurs the lines between traditional and digital art forms and invites a reflective dialogue between historical and futuristic perspectives.
Visitors are invited to navigate this 'strange terrain,' uncovering and engaging with the unfolding mysteries of AI through Alsino’s paintings. Each piece serves as a waypoint in this exploration, challenging us to imagine and articulate our insights into this strange new world, echoing the exhibition’s title.
